Not a Backup Plan—The Plan: Community College
When I began mapping out my career in information technology, cybersecurity, and project management, the options were overwhelming.

Universities promised prestige but also came with high tuition and rigid schedules. I needed something different—something flexible, affordable, and supportive. That’s why I chose Brightpoint Community College. It continues to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Brightpoint has given me countless opportunities to grow—both academically and professionally. With 4- and 8-week courses offered year-round and most classes available asynchronously online, I’ve been able to create a schedule that fits my life. The ability to learn at my own pace while balancing work and family has been essential in keeping me on track. Brightpoint’s Academic Resource Center (ARC) also offers free tutoring in writing, STEM, business, study skills, and more—with no limit to how many sessions students can access (Brightpoint Community College, n.d..). It’s just one of many ways the college supports its students beyond the classroom.
Financial aid at Brightpoint is extensive. I’ve been given access to programs like the Trailblazer Success Grant, Virginia Commonwealth Grant, and VGAP (Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program)—all designed to ensure that cost isn’t a barrier to success. For part-time students, the Virginia Part-time Tuition Assistance Program and VCCS Tuition Grant provide support for those enrolled in as few as 1–8 credits per semester (Brightpoint Community College, n.d..). In addition, Brightpoint Scholarships, funded through the college’s foundation, award over $250,000 annually in need- and merit-based aid (Brightpoint Community College, n.d.). One application each spring puts students in the running for all scholarships they’re eligible for—no FAFSA required. These scholarships support students across a wide range of majors and backgrounds, making them a valuable resource for many.
One of Brightpoint’s most exciting offerings is the G3 Tuition Assistance Program, which prepares students for in-demand jobs in Virginia—often at little to no cost. G3 supports programs in healthcare, IT, manufacturing, early childhood education, skilled trades, public safety, and human services (Brightpoint Community College, n.d..). To qualify, students must be Virginia residents, meet income guidelines, enroll in a G3-eligible program, and apply for financial aid. G3 covers any tuition and fees not paid by other aid and includes a book stipend. It’s available to both full- and part-time students and is ideal for working adults like me. For those wanting to enter the workforce quickly, Brightpoint also partners with the Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA) to offer FastForward training—short-term programs that can be completed in as little as six weeks. Coming from a low-income family, I’ve personally benefited from this amazing resource.
For someone like me, Brightpoint has been more than just a college—it’s been a launchpad. The combination of flexible learning, strong career preparation, and generous financial support has helped me build a future I’m proud of. Community college often carries an outdated stigma, but I can say with confidence: it offers everything a student needs to succeed. Whether you're exploring a new path, restarting your journey, or leveling up your career, community college can help you reach your goals. It certainly did for me!
