Corrective Reading Comprehension builds the reasoning, vocabulary, and knowledge older students need to make sense of text. With fully prescribed lessons, integrated assessments, and a proven Direct Instruction model, the program helps students become confident learners across subjects.

Targeted Intervention for Every Learner

The instruction model for Corrective Reading Comprehension is highly structured and includes four levels of intervention for Grades 3 and up. Multiple points of entry address varied comprehension deficits and skill levels found among older students, ensuring strategic, differentiated intervention for all learners.

Designed for non-readers or students who read haltingly and cannot understand what they have read, Comprehension A creates a framework for learning new information and filling in background knowledge. Teachers can engage students in higher-order thinking skills based on this new foundation of knowledge.

Teaches:

  • Vocabulary: Definitions, synonyms, and antonyms
  • Reasoning: Deductions, inferences, analogies, classification, and comparisons
  • Semantics: Concepts such as all/every, some/none, and/or, no/don’t
  • Knowledge: Background knowledge (e.g., calendar, classes of animals) and organizing related facts
  • Memory: Recitation practice to strengthen recall

Comprehension B1 helps students develop the skills necessary to construct meaning from content-based text. This enables students to comprehend any subject matter they read and learn new information efficiently.

Teaches:

  • Vocabulary: Definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and descriptions
  • Reasoning: Deductions, inferences, analogies, classification, and recognizing contradictions
  • Writing and Grammar: Sentence skills, editing, and paragraph development
  • Knowledge: Human body systems, basic economics, and organizing information
  • Application: Using deductive reasoning to apply rules

  • Reasoning: Deductions, evidence-based conclusions, syllogistic rules, and recognizing contradictions
  • Application: Reading factual text, evaluating sources, and interpreting maps, pictures, and graphs

Comprehension C
