Targeted Intervention for Every Learner

The instruction model for Corrective Reading Comprehension is highly structured and includes four levels of intervention for Grades 3 and up. Multiple points of entry address varied comprehension deficits and skill levels found among older students, ensuring strategic, differentiated intervention for all learners.

Comprehension A: Thinking Basics

Designed for non-readers or students who read haltingly and cannot understand what they have read, Comprehension A creates a framework for learning new information and filling in background knowledge. Teachers can engage students in higher-order thinking skills based on this new foundation of knowledge.

Teaches:

Vocabulary: Definitions, synonyms, and antonyms
Reasoning: Deductions, inferences, analogies, classification, and comparisons
Semantics: Concepts such as all/every, some/none, and/or, no/don’t
Knowledge: Background knowledge (e.g., calendar, classes of animals) and organizing related facts
Memory: Recitation practice to strengthen recall

Comprehension B1 helps students develop the skills necessary to construct meaning from content-based text. This enables students to comprehend any subject matter they read and learn new information efficiently.

Reasoning: Deductions, inferences, analogies, classification, and recognizing contradictions
Writing and Grammar: Sentence skills, editing, and paragraph development
Knowledge: Human body systems, basic economics, and organizing information
