McGraw Hill's Commitment to Accessibility in Higher Education

We are committed to unlocking the potential of every student, and that means providing equitable access to learning materials and platforms for all learners. Accessibility and universal design for learning are central to all our development efforts and integrated into our processes at every level. This focus enables us to create content and learning tools that empower all learners.

Designing Accessible and Inclusive Learning Tools

McGraw Hill makes every effort to ensure our content and technology follows the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2 Level AA). At every level, we design, test, and iterate to build accessible learning platforms and materials.

What does this look like?

  • Our internal McGraw Hill higher education accessibility team consistently monitors accessibility guidelines and uses that to evaluate and improve our product offerings.
  • We partner with industry-recognized third-party vendors to produce an objective evaluation of the accessibility compliance of our products; we then transparently report those findings through our Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs), also referred to as Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs).
  • We also incorporate native user testing on our products so that we can measure our results against real-world examples that meet the needs of all learners.

Following the POUR Principles

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines follow the POUR Principles, and we follow those principles when developing our learning resources. The principles are as follows:

Perceivable
The content we create must be perceivable to all users, including those with visual or auditory disabilities. This means, for example, we incorporate color contrast, audio transcripts, and closed captions on video material—among other things.

Operable
Operability has to do with a user’s ability to use or navigate the learning materials. This is especially applicable to our online platforms, such as Connect—when we build those platforms we design them to be used with keyboard navigation, screen readers, and other assistive techniques and technologies.

Understandable
Both the content and the interface of our learning materials are designed to be understandable to the average user, including logical navigational elements and clear instructions.

Robust
We develop our resources to align with specific assistive technologies, such as multiple screen readers, to make sure that our platforms and products are robust enough to be accessible to a variety of users.

Advancing Accessibility Together

We partner with administrators, instructors, and accessibility specialists to create a meaningful and engaging learning experience for all students.

And we don’t stop there – we also engage with advocacy organizations and user groups that are committed to accessibility. This collective feedback is essential to our progress in accessibility and usability.
