Literacy

We believe literacy is the foundation of all learning. Our approach brings together extensive research, the joy of reading and writing, belonging and self-efficacy, and personalized pathways to help every student thrive. Grounded in the Science of Literacy—which unites the Science of Reading, the Science of Writing, and Knowledge Building—we empower educators to leverage the art of teaching to develop strong readers, writers, and thinkers. Our programs support evidence-based, effective instruction while honoring the diverse experiences students bring to the classroom. With formative assessments, progress monitoring, and an AI-driven personalization ecosystem, every learner can find success on their own unique path to lifelong literacy.

The Science of Literacy

Literacy is the foundation of learning across all disciplines. For several years, the Science of Reading has been dominating the national conversation about literacy, with phonics at its center. As research and knowledge continue to evolve, it’s time to expand our definition of what science-based reading instruction entails. That’s why we approach instruction from the frame of the Science of Literacy—a phrase that encompasses the Science of Reading, the Science of Writing, and Knowledge Building more broadly. Because together, these bodies of research unlock the wide array of interrelated skills needed to build strong readers, writers, and thinkers. The more you write, the better you read, the more you understand.

  • Guided by literacy leaders Dr. Jan Hasbrouck and Dr. Katie Pace Miles, Emerge! takes an explicit, systematic approach to foundational skills instruction, incorporating research-based routines and a gradual release model for maximum impact; Dr. Steve Graham and Dr. Karen Harris brought their expertise to our explicit, recursive writing pathway, leveraging the reading-writing connection to link each text to a variety of genre writing projects.

  • Open Court Reading offers a legacy of proven, intentional instruction. For over 60 years, this structured literacy program has been grounded in the science of reading. Every component is intentionally designed to develop strong, fluent readers who can comprehend and engage with complex texts.

  • Read to Achieve (6–12) and Reading Success (4–12) are structured literacy programs grounded in the Science of Reading and designed to reflect the broader Science of Literacy. Every component is intentionally built to develop fluent, capable readers who can comprehend and engage with complex texts. They combine explicit decoding instruction with strategic writing practice and content-rich reading that builds knowledge.

  • Summit! and Soar! use engaging, developmentally-appropriate and motivating texts to help 6–12 students build on foundational literacy skills by strengthening word recognition and sentence analysis skills.

Resilient, Empowered Learners

Every student deserves to feel that they belong at school – as a community, as an experience, as a place.

We approach literacy instruction with the understanding that the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively and with confidence is the key to that sense of belonging. Our literacy programs are carefully designed to foster self-efficacy, or a student’s ability to use their knowledge and skills to complete tasks, overcome obstacles, and achieve their goals. By leveraging what we know about learning science, our programs use AI-powered technology, engaging activities, strategically designed lessons, and student-teacher interactions to ensure every learner – including our most fragile – is engaged, motivated, and self-efficacious.

When every learner’s contribution to the classroom is framed as an asset, when they can see themselves reflected in what they read, and when they hold a fundamental belief in their ability to succeed in school, literacy truly becomes a pathway to possibility.

  • Students using Emerge! will have opportunities to take ownership of their learning through strategically designed Focus Groups and Study Groups, each of which are a cornerstone in the program's approach to differentiation.

  • The 2027 edition of Corrective Reading Decoding is a powerful intervention designed to close achievement gaps and unlock every learner’s potential, including multilingual learners and older students who need a clear path to reading success. By strengthening access to skills through updated content, clearer routines, and more targeted support, the program helps students build confidence, see growth, and experience the sense of belonging that comes from meaningful progress in reading.

  • Summit! And Soar! place belonging at the center of instruction, with responsive pedagogy, diverse texts, and lessons carefully designed to motivate students while building self-efficacy.

  • With a focus on real-world applications, Achieve3000 Literacy helps every student, including multilingual learners and students with dyslexia, visualize the power of literacy in daily life with its robust Career Center.

Effective, Joyful Teaching

Teaching a student to read, write, and express their voice is one of the most fulfilling, joyful experiences an educator can have—a true expression of the art of teaching. Our literacy programs leverage science-based instruction that empowers teachers with the tools, structure, and confidence they need to help every student succeed, without sacrificing the personalization that enables them to practice the art of teaching their own unique way. By pairing evidence-based methods with the joy of literacy, we ensure that educators can enjoy the journey while helping students not only become fluent readers, writers, and speakers, but also develop the self-efficacy and agency to take ownership of their learning and believe in their ability to grow.

  • Every teacher—from newcomers to seasoned veterans—receives a tailored professional learning journey that guides them through how to use the program and offers powerful, research-based approaches to literacy. These include videos at point of use (classroom modeling, author insights, and other supports), use of clear research-based instructional routines, and the overall structure of Emerge!, which includes practices and guidance that can help every teacher deliver instruction the way a “master teacher” might.

  • Direct Instruction programs are structured to enable any educator, regardless of background or experience, to implement them with ease. Lessons are systematic, explicit, and carefully paced, with built-in prompts that guide teachers to provide corrective feedback and targeted support at key instructional moments. This strong instructional design supports effective teaching by giving educators clear tools and routines that help every student build essential skills with confidence.

  • Through the Open Court Reading systematic, explicit instruction and scope and sequence that follows a purposeful progression of skills, teachers are empowered to turn research into action with each lesson. With resources like the Interactive Teacher’s Edition, ePresentations, Lesson Planners, Resource Library, and a variety of Professional Development videos, teachers are supported every step of the way.

  • Actively Learn allows educators to adjust text selections and lesson pacing to meet individual class and student needs. Filtering and assigning text that resonates with students to keep them engaged and motivated is pivotal.
