English Learners Achieve Accelerated Reading Progress

English Language Learners in a diverse midsize district exceeded Lexile growth expectations using Achieve3000 Literacy in grades 2–12.

Description

A diverse, midsize public school district located outside a major metropolitan area used Achieve3000 Literacy to accelerate reading growth for English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades 2–12. The study included 1,690 ELL students out of 15,500 total enrolled, representing 21.8% of the district population.  Findings showed that students using Achieve3000 Literacy achieved significantly higher Lexile growth than expected during the 2023–2024 school year. The district’s ELL students logged an average of 92 sessions and completed nearly 62 activities, resulting in an average Lexile gain of 195L—exceeding the expected growth of 135L. Those demonstrating high-fidelity usage, defined by an Average First Try Score (AFTS) of 75% or higher and completion of 40 or more activities, achieved an even greater average Lexile gain of 285L compared to 170L among non-high-fidelity users.  Students in grades 4 and 5 exhibited the greatest number of logins, while grades 11 and 12 completed the most activities. Grades 8, 9, and 12 showed the highest first-try scores. Additionally, the percentage of students meeting or exceeding college and career readiness benchmarks increased as the year progressed, with fewer students rated as “falls far below” or “approaches” readiness levels and more students moving into the “meets” or “exceeds” categories.  Overall, results indicate accelerated reading progress for English Learners engaged consistently with Achieve3000 Literacy, highlighting strong Lexile growth associated with sustained, high-fidelity use.
