There are two major business and education trends converging in the 2026-2027 academic year. First, employers are demanding that new grads have tangible, real-world skills. These include analytical thinking, data literacy, AI fluency, strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and storytelling. However, and I cannot stress this enough, just having developed those skills individually in isolation is no longer enough for business/workplace success. The second trend makes this clear because employers frame it as “systems thinking.” While this term is not new, it has largely taken on a renewed focus with the advent of AI and the skills economy. Systems thinking is now all about understanding how business functions interconnect and how seemingly insignificant decisions ripple across the organization. Given these two emerging trends, a modern business mindset is now about knowing how and when to deploy specific skillsets appropriately across an interdependent system/organization. 

Another way to articulate this idea is that tangible skills show what you are capable of as an individual. Systems thinking, within the context of a business mindset, showcases what you can actually accomplish with those skills, producing meaningful results for an organization. Both (skills and systems thinking) are required. Without tangible skills, you cannot realistically perform a necessary task at work. Without systems thinking, you are not generating results with your skills that move the firm forward (e.g., increased productivity, greater efficiency, cost savings). 

For example, it is one thing to be able to perform a function in Excel (a tangible skill). It is yet another level to recognize how that specific process helps (or hurts) the company and to suggest better, more efficient methods for achieving the maximum result (a systems-thinking application). 

There are numerous methods for improving acumen in skills development and systems thinking. However, three concepts that relate to helping students build a better business mindset in 2026-2027 include baseline AI proficiency, CBE education/training, and authentic artifacts.

Develop Baseline AI Proficiency

Numerous specific skill areas could be discussed here, but one that currently stands out in the education space is AI. An analysis by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) of 84 institutions and 4,253 respondents across 145 countries found that 50% of prospective graduate business students now expect AI to be integrated into their ideal curriculum. Additionally, students are not asking to be trained merely as AI tool-operators; two-thirds want hands-on integration through business simulations, 62% want courses on how AI informs strategy, and 58% want AI applied to decision-making. In other words, today’s students want AI embedded in judgment-based coursework (strategy, decision-making), not simply isolated as a tools tutorial (Graduate Management Admission Council, 2026; Ethier, 2026).

Competency-Based Education/Training

Many colleges and universities, as well as several training organizations, offer competency-based education (CBE) and/or training (CBT) programs. The same GMAC study referenced earlier also recommends that institutions democratize AI education, so it becomes a universal competency for all students rather than a specialized track. Specifically, promoting and safeguarding discernment (also a component of systems thinking) as a teachable skill/competency properly positions AI as an amplifier of judgment, not a substitute for it (Graduate Management Admission Council, 2026; Ethier, 2026).

Utilize Authentic Artifacts

Authentic artifacts are gaining momentum as strong evidence of the development and validation of a business mindset. A 2026 AACSB analysis of business school recruitment showed that traditional signals, such as GPA and alma mater prestige, are losing weight relative to demonstrable skills and competencies, such as systems thinking (Harland, 2026). Specifically, employers are beginning to prioritize job-relevant capabilities and portfolio artifacts (competency mastery, evidenced through authentic work products) above credentials alone. Always remember, it’s not just what you know, it’s what you can show.
