Pipeline Initiative Project: Learn how one faculty member inspires the next generation of accounting students.
Discover how UMKC’s Julie Kline inspires future accountants through outreach presentations, empowering students to share their journeys and spark interest in business careers.
Julie Kline, Associate Teaching Professor at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, has championed an impactful initiative at the UMKC Bloch School of Management that not only inspires future business professionals but also addresses a critical need in the accounting field: building a strong pipeline of talented, passionate students. Through the High School and Community College Outreach Presentation assignment, Bloch students are tasked with organizing and delivering presentations that highlight the benefits of pursuing a business major, particularly accounting.
This initiative empowers Bloch students to share their personal college journeys, insights into life at UMKC, and the exciting career opportunities in accounting. The presentations, which can take various formats such as formal talks, panel discussions, or interactive activities, allow students to connect meaningfully with younger learners while honing their professional presentation skills.
Beyond inspiring individual students, this initiative plays a vital role in fueling the accounting major pipeline. By showcasing the versatility and rewarding nature of accounting careers, Bloch students are helping spark interest in a field essential to the economy but often underrepresented among incoming college students. Faculty members at participating high schools and community colleges have noted the positive impact these presentations have on their students, with many expressing interests in continuing the collaboration to encourage business and accounting pathways further.
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Students have described the experience as fun and rewarding, reconnecting with former teachers and campuses while inspiring the next generation. Student Michael Sigler, a Shawnee Mission North High School alum, stated, "It (the presentation) was very well received, and Mr. Mansfield at North expressed interest in having students from our program come back to present in other semesters; he thought it had a positive impact on the class.”
Julie Kline’s initiative exemplifies the Bloch School’s commitment to community engagement, professional development, and fostering a passion for business education. By combining mentorship, storytelling, and professional skill-building, this program is shaping future leaders while strengthening the accounting pipeline—ensuring the field continues to thrive with fresh talent and innovative ideas.
