Horry County Students Lead Way in Mathematics

Grade 3 students in Horry County Schools scoring at or above the Basic level on South Carolina's Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test rose from 54% to 91% after the district adopted Everyday Mathematics, with similar gains in Grades 4 and 5 helping establish Horry County as one of the state's highest-performing districts in mathematics. Horry County Schools, South Carolina's third-largest district with approximately 34,000 students, began implementing the program in the late 1990s and completed districtwide adoption in Grades K–5, supporting implementation through teacher-leader mentoring, continuous professional development, and differentiated instruction that allowed students to advance into higher-level mathematics coursework earlier.
