Sumner, Washington School District Boosts Literacy with Direct Instruction

Recognized as one of the premier districts in the Tacoma, Washington area, the Sumner School District focuses on creating a learning environment where academic success is the standard for each child. The district's eight elementary schools, three middle schools, and two comprehensive high schools serve nearly 9,000 students. To support the approximately 20 percent of students falling behind in reading, the district implemented two McGraw Hill Direct Instruction programs: Reading Mastery and Corrective Reading. The implementation focused on providing initial and ongoing training and coaching to ensure fidelity. After two or three educators at each school became proficient, they were tasked with evaluating progress and providing additional help. The district has seen an increase in student confidence and achievement with Reading Mastery and Corrective Reading. The programs provide predictability and routine, which helps both students and teachers feel successful.
