Riverton Middle School Supports Core and More with Direct Instruction

Riverton Middle School, serving a diverse population of 2,500 students in Wyoming, implemented McGraw Hill's Corrective Reading and Read to Achieve programs to provide an alternative to special education for students with low reading scores. The school, where 45-50% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, needed a more effective Response to Intervention (RTI) model. The programs provide level-set instruction in decoding and comprehension, helping to narrow the students' achievement gap. Data from the 2014-2015 school year showed that intensive students in grades 6-8 performed twice as well as expected. Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing results in 2016 for a group of nine students in the Corrective Reading classroom showed a 78% increase in their total reading score from fall to spring, with 67% meeting or exceeding their target RIT growth.
