Description

Achieve3000 Literacy + Boost was studied in Aldine ISD, a large urban public school district in Texas, during the 2017–2018 school year. The program targeted seventh- and eighth-grade students requiring reading intervention. The study included 1,161 students across multiple classrooms and schools. Aldine ISD serves economically disadvantaged students, with 90% qualifying for this designation and over a third being English language learners.

The methodology was correlational, examining the relationship between program usage and student outcomes on the STAAR Reading test and Lexile growth. Students completed embedded assessments within the lessons, which were tailored to their Lexile reading levels using a Bayesian scoring algorithm.

Outcomes showed substantial improvements. Students exceeded expected growth of 82L, demonstrating an average Lexile growth of 91L. Those who completed 40+ lessons with high-quality practice (average first-try score ≥75%) achieved 225L growth, over 2.5x the expected growth. STAAR Reading results revealed that 51% of students passed in 2018 compared to 17% in 2017. High-fidelity users (80+ lessons, AFTS ≥75%) had an 89% pass rate. Statistical significance was reported (p < .0001), with a strong positive correlation (r = 0.64) between Lexile growth and STAAR scale score improvement.
