About the Program
The Grade K Science: A Closer Look program centers around the easy-to-view Flipbook that focuses the attention of young learners and provides support for whole-class instruction. The easy-to-use Teacher Edition helps make best use of instructional time with helpful teaching strategies and is available spiral-bound or online. Colorful Big Books support science instruction through a shared reading experience and reproduce the Science Leveled Readers for whole-class instruction. The Grade K Leveled Readers feature a reader per chapter in four levels: Approaching, On-Level, Beyond, and ELL to reinforce reading skills and strategies while promoting science understanding. Manipulative kits, the Science Songs Audio CD, science floor puzzles, Photo Sorting Cards, and other ancillaries make Science: A Closer Look a complete science experience for your students!

This document summarizes the research behind Science: A Closer Look. It is divided into four parts: 1. A bibliography of the research that was reviewed and studied and which provided the foundation for our instructional pedagogy and lesson structure. 2. A summary of our field study data conducted on the prior Macmillan Science series which provided a basis in the development of Science: A Closer Look. This verification data supports the instructional methodology and program design. 3. A review of results of the long term implementation studies on how the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and its support of staff development initiatives translated into teacher and student success as measured by public release of state test data in the St. Louis Public Schools. 4.
