    Dr. Jax Sanders

    Dr. Jax Sanders is a gravitational wave instrumentalist specializing in the design and commissioning of next-generation interferometers. After earning their PhD from the University of Michigan, Dr. Sanders served as an Advanced LIGO Commissioner at the Hanford Observatory, where they focused on the sensing and control systems essential for optical alignment. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at Syracuse University centered on future detector conceptual design, Dr. Sanders continues to push the boundaries of gravitational wave astronomy. They hold the unique distinction of being the final person to defend a thesis in the "pre-detection" era—though their commitment to the field is permanent, evidenced by their tattoo of the GW150914 inspiral signal. Dr. Sanders is currently an assistant professor at Marquette University where they bring the same creativity and problem-solving to improving physical education for all students.
