In your author’s opinion, drug trafficking alone does not justify the United States military’s invasion and occupation of Mexico. Mexico is a sovereign country. It is not engaged in drug trafficking; rather, people are. If the U.S. government considers drug trafficking a substantial threat, the appropriate path for it to take is to continue to partner with the government of Mexico to bring such traffickers to justice. Additionally, the United States can intensify its interdiction efforts at the U.S.-Mexico border and other entry points. In your author’s opinion, the United States should also intensify its efforts to quell the “demand side of the equation.” Without U.S. consumer demand, Mexican drug traffickers would not have a U.S. market.
