Welcome to a post I wish I had read when I was juggling classes, assignments, club events, and trying to catch a breath in between it all.

College can get a lot. Between coursework, campus life, family responsibilities, and just trying to take care of yourself—you’re constantly switching hats. And when the to-do list starts to feel endless, it’s easy to feel like you’re barely keeping up.

But over time, I picked up a few helpful strategies that made the load feel a little lighter, and I’m excited to share them with you!

Quick Tips to Manage a Heavy Course Load

Use your planner like a best friend

Whether it’s digital or on paper, writing down deadlines, class times, and weekly goals helps get everything out of your head and into a system. I even added little quotes or smiley faces to celebrate small wins!

Break big tasks into smaller chunks

Instead of “study for midterm,” write “review lecture slides,” “do 10 practice questions,” or “re-watch a recorded session.” Small steps feel more doable—and you’re more likely to start.

Study with friends

If you’re all in the same class, set up a study session. You’ll stay accountable and can help each other through confusing topics. If you’re in different classes, study alongside each other for motivation and vibe checks.

Use breaks wisely

Have a long break between classes? Find a quiet spot on campus to knock out a few assignments or review notes. I used these windows to get ahead—and it felt so good going home with less left to do.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Talk to your professors during office hours if you’re stuck or need flexibility. Most of the time, they’ll appreciate your communication.

Explore different study spots

Changing scenery can reset your energy. I loved switching it up between the library, quad tables, or smaller lounge areas around campus.

Celebrate progress

Finished a big paper? Reward yourself with a favorite meal, walk with friends, or even just a chill night in. Those “little” moments matter.

Join a club—even one

It might seem like one more thing, but joining a club gave me social breaks, purpose outside of academics, and new friendships that kept me grounded.

A Fun Reflection Before You Go

Let’s do a quick activity to personalize your own strategy:

Imagine you only have 2 hours today to get things done.

  • Your to-do list includes:
  • A group project task
  • A reading assignment
  • Replying to professor emails
  • Reviewing slides for a quiz

Which task would you start with and why?

Write out the order you’d do things—and what you might save for later or ask for help on.

This little “priority game” helps you notice how you work best. It also reminds you that not everything has to be done at once. Sometimes, doing the next right thing is more than enough.

You’ve got a lot going on—but you’ve also got what it takes to handle it.

Keep showing up, one small win at a time.
