NEW YORK, Oct. 16, 2018 – McGraw-Hill today announced a new upcoming webinar on critical thinking, the latest installment in the learning science company’s free Virtual Professional Development Series for higher education faculty. The webinar, "Instill a Critical Mindset," will be hosted by Dr. Heather Collins, a cognitive scientist at the Medical University of South Carolina, and will take place on Friday, October 19, at 1 p.m. EDT.

Dr. Collins has been published in prestigious academic journals, such as the New England Journal of Medicine, has collaborated on projects involving NASA astronauts, and her popular TEDx Talk, Successful Thinking: It’s a Know-Brainer has 20,000+ views.

According to McGraw-Hill’s 2018 Future Workforce Survey, only 56 percent of students feel they’ve learned critical thinking skills in college. "Critical thinking is essential for success in college and the workforce, but it’s a skill that can often be challenging for educators to foster among students, particularly in an age when students have grown accustomed to simply Googling information rather than thinking analytically," said Susan Gouijnstook, VP of Learning Solutions Strategy at McGraw-Hill. "We hope instructors will find Dr. Collins’ insights and advice useful in the classroom and beyond."

McGraw-Hill’s Virtual Professional Development Series, launched last year, aims to address a range of challenges that college instructors face, exploring new ideas and effective approaches for engaging and connecting with learners. Previous professional development webinars include:

  • "Online Learning: Are Students Adequately Set Up for Success?" moderated by Michael Feldstein, Co-Publisher of e-Literate
  • "Engaging Generation Z in the Classroom," hosted by Dr. Jean Twenge, Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University
