Reveal Math K–5 Pedagogy
Instructional Design
Flexible Lesson Design
Reveal Math is the hybrid solution that supports any instructional setting with engaging and effective teaching materials.
See an overview of Reveal Math's blended delivery model below.
Standards-Driven
Reveal Math breaks down the standards into a coherent scope and sequence that emphasizes and reinforces each grade level’s major content areas to develop a strong foundation as students progress towards algebra. Major, supporting and additional standards are labeled at point of use within the Teacher Edition along with the rigor focus and depth of knowledge of practice and assessment items where appropriate.
Reveal Math not only addresses the mathematical practice and processes within its instructional design, it defines and models the math practices for students. Within the Math Is…Unit, the first unit of every grade level, students learn how to use mathematical practices while problem-solving. Integrating the mathematical practices into the math classroom becomes a daily expectation and is reinforced by Math Is labeling within the Teacher and Student Edition.
Effective Teaching Practices
Reveal Math's instructional design integrates NCTM's Effective Teaching Practices to ensure an environment that promotes rich learning, deep understanding, and mathematical success for all. Embedded supports help teachers create an environment centered on rich discourse with effective questioning techniques and guidance. Effective Teaching Practices support a productive and positive classroom centered on discourse and productive struggle to create deep and meaningful understanding.
Routines
Instructional routines are embedded within every Reveal Math lesson to support a productive classroom. Routines provide structure and dedicated time to critical instructional moments to develop a strong understanding, such as number sense, sense-making, and communication.
- Number Routines Support the development of flexibility with numbers and fluency with operations at the start of every lesson. Daily focus on number sense helps ensure that all students build a strong mathematical foundation.
- Math Language Routines Promote mathematical language use and development as part of math instruction.
- Sense-Making Routines Build sense-making as a foundation for problem-solving and mathematical modeling.
Student Agency
Growth Mindset
Reveal Math is designed around the belief that all students can be doers of mathematics and dedicates time within the first unit to solely focus on the development of a growth mindset while learning math, making it clear that it is a journey that continues to evolve over time and is not fixed. Daily Math Is Mindset prompts throughout the Student Edition and Teacher Edition remind students to employ a growth mindset throughout the year.
One way Reveal Math aims to promote a growth mindset is beginning every unit with an Ignite! Activity. These activities are an interesting problem or puzzle that:
- Sparks students' interest and curiosity.
- Provides only enough information to open up students' thinking.
- Motivates them to persevere through challenges involved in problem-solving.
Social and Emotional Learning
A focus on social and emotional learning helps drive a positive math classroom where students are encouraged and motivated to engage in mathematics. Every lesson addresses a social and emotional learning objective along with the math and language objectives of the lesson. Each grade level engages in all of the CASEL Social and Emotional Learning competencies throughout the year.
Sense-Making
Reveal Math places an emphasis on sense-making as it is the foundation to problem solving and mathematical modeling. Curiosity in math helps drive student agency and engagement within the math classroom.
- Each unit opens with an Ignite! activity, an interesting problem or puzzle that sparks students' interest and curiosity, providing only enough information to open up students' thinking and motivate perseverance.
- Be Curious launches every lesson and is designed to encourage student curiosity and ideas while observing a situation, problem, or phenomena. All ideas are respected and welcomed in this low floor, high ceiling activity as students discuss what they notice in the problem and what they are wondering about things they don't know or understand. Be Curious utilizes one of four sense-making routines to build conceptual understanding and make sense of the lesson's math.
Supports for the Language of Math
Reveal Math was developed around this belief—that mathematics is not just a series of operations, but a way of communicating—listening, speaking, reading, writing, and most importantly, thinking. Language supports are embedded to help students build a shared language and communicate effectively about math, including Language of Math, WIDA-based English Learner Scaffolds, Math Language Development Focus and Math Language Routines within every lesson. Students have access to a Spanish/English Glossary as well as read aloud functionality within the Interactive Student Edition and digital assessment features. Vocabulary Cards and Vocabulary Review help reinforce and provide extra practice on unit vocabulary.
Practice and Differentiation
Fluency
Fluency is not just about memorization; it is about having a working understanding and mastery of operations, relationships, and concepts. Reveal Math speaks to all the elements of fluency throughout each unit. Daily Fluency activities include Number Routines, Digital Games, and Spiral Review. Every Unit includes a Fluency Practice page that follows a fluency progressing throughout the grade level, developing not only procedural fluency, but conceptual fluency as well.
See the Research behind Fluency in the Math Classroom.
Differentiation
Differentiation within Reveal Math provides a variety of engaging, multi-modal activities with different delivery options that students can focus on for that lesson. Exit Tickets inform the instructional goal for the daily differentiation, Reinforce Understanding, Build Proficiency, or Extend Thinking. Multiple options are available for each instructional goal, including workstations, online activities, and independent practice.
Assessment and Targeted Intervention
Assessment
All of Reveal Math Assessments are designed with purpose to inform the instructional design of the program and are easy to act on with point of use item analysis, recommendations, and targeted intervention resources. This allows teachers to adjust instruction to respond to student needs. Practice and Assessment items are easily aligned to elements of rigor and DOK.
One Unique assessment to Reveal Math is the Math Probe, which supports teachers in identifying specific misconceptions within each unit. Two-part questions allow students to demonstrate their understanding with answers that convey their reasoning. Authentic Student Samples helps teachers quickly target the misconceptions. Remedies are provided to correct the misunderstanding.
Targeted Intervention
Intervention resources align with each problem within the unit's Ready Diagnostic and Unit Assessment, making item analysis easily actionable to correct misunderstanding and target gaps in learning.

Take Another Look digital mini-lessons provide quick, actionable data to help inform instruction while supporting each student with a three-part, gradual-release activity:
- Modeling
- Interactive Practice
- Lesson Check

Guided Support provides a teacher-facilitated small group mini-lesson that uses concrete modeling and discussion to build conceptual understanding.

Skills Support Sheets are skill-based practice sheets that provide targeted practice of previously taught items.
