Let’s Code It! 3rd Edition
Exciting news that the coding textbook, “Let’s Code It!” released a new – third– edition!
This new edition includes updated 2022 codes and guidelines across all four code sets: ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, and ICD-10-PCS. You will find that details have been added to include important topics that all coders must understand such as reporting Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) codes. Of course, we have included the latest COVID-19 codes as well.
Let’s Code It! is specifically written to ease the path of learning coding for students, and to make every instructor’s job smoother. Chapters 1, 2, and 3 introduce students to the foundational knowledge and skills they need prior to learning how to code. The coding chapters are filled with examples that students can relate to -- like a kid with a jellybean up his nose.
Throughout each chapter there are opportunities for hands-on learning. Students are taught a concept or process, and then they get to actually practice it! Connect– our online learning system – includes assessments and case studies, updated with the 2022 codes, which can be autograded and provide detailed feedback for incorrect answers. This way, instructors can spend their time helping students understand and work through their coding process, rather than grading quizzes and tests. Additional instructor support includes pre-recorded videos for each chapter along with the Instructor’s Manual and PowerPoint slides.

Shelley Safian
Dr. Shelley C. Safian has been teaching Health Care Administration, Health Information Management, and Medical Billing and Coding, both onsite and online, for more than 15 years. Safian writes a monthly Q&A column for the online publication JustCoding and writes several articles each year on various aspects of coding. In addition, she is the author of six textbooks. Her newest book, Foundations of Health Care Administration, was released in January 2014. Safian is in her fourth year as the chair of the continuing education committee for FHIMA (Florida Health Information Management Association). In the past, she has served on several committees and practice councils on the national, state, and local levels of the American Health Information Management Association. She is a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS-P), a Certified Professional Coder (CPC-H, CPC-I), and an ICD-10-CM/PCS trainer.
Mary Johnson
Mary Johnson is currently the Medical Record Coding Program Director at Central Carolina Technical College, Sumter, South Carolina. Her background includes corporate training as well as on-campus and online platforms. Johnson also designs and implements customized coding curricula. Johnson received her Bachelor of Arts dual degree in Business Administration and Marketing from Columbia College, Columbia, South Carolina. Johnson is a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credentialed through the American Academy of Professional Coders and is ICD-10-CM proficient.
