Emerge into the
World of Biliteracy

Welcome to ¡Emerger juntos! California

Biliteracy is more than just knowing two languages; it’s a powerful skill that unlocks a world of personal, professional, and academic opportunities. ¡Emerger juntos! California works alongside Emerge! California to welcome students into the world of biliteracy—building the skills they need to read, write, and think critically in both English and Spanish.

Balancing Spanish and English

Biliteracy is a superpower that sets students up for success—but planning and teaching literacy in two languages can be a daunting task. That’s why ¡Emerger juntos! California provides differentiated pathways for the two most prominent dual language instructional models, 90:10 and 50:50.

  • 90:10 Model

Schools with a higher proportion of English‑fluent students often choose the 90:10 model, immersing students in the target language during the early grades to build a strong linguistic foundation. Extra focus is given to Spanish in Grades TK–2, while older grades receive both SLA and ELA daily.

  • 50:50 Model

Communities with large numbers of multilingual learners frequently select the 50:50 model, introducing literacy in both English and Spanish simultaneously. 50% of instruction is delivered in each language each day from TK–5.

Whichever model you choose, ¡Emerger juntos! California opens doors to developing bilingualism, biliteracy, academic achievement, and sociocultural competence.

Writing

¡Emerger juntos! California leverages a dedicated recursive writing pathway that links each text to a variety of genre writing projects. The goal for students in the upper grades is to read in one language and write about it in the other, encouraging them to flex their biliterate brains and make meaningful connections between languages. Additionally, students receive targeted support for the language-specific features and nuances of Spanish with Afiches de lectoescritura / Literacy Support Cards that complement the grammar minilessons.
