Emerge into the
World of Literacy

Launch the Literacy Journey

Built for California’s ELA/ELD Framework, Emerge! California leads K–5 students through the first leg of their literacy journey, taking them through the steps of learning to read, reading to learn, and developing the writing and critical thinking skills to match. While each journey is unique, the destination is the same; each student emerges on the other side with the foundational skills and funds of knowledge they need to conquer the challenges ahead.

Emerge! California
in Your Classroom

The Emerge! California instructional model takes an explicit, systematic approach to teaching foundational skills, comprehension and knowledge building, and writing about texts and topics—cohesively connecting the strands needed for skilled reading and writing.

Foundational Skills

Foundational skills are critical to building lifelong literacy; without them, complex learning cannot take place. Our instruction centers on an explicit, systematic set of routines that follow a gradual release process to slowly transition students toward independent practice.

Building Comprehension and Knowledge

Our instruction fuses knowledge building with comprehension building—giving students the tools to both understand what they’re reading and build a vast, interconnected network of knowledge. Text-driven instruction dives deep into vertically aligned, cross-disciplinary topics in literature, science, and social studies.

Concept Knowledge

Prepare students to engage with the Essential Question by building a shared knowledge base.

Vocabulary

New concept and target words deepen student understanding and expand their oral vocabularies to support comprehension and knowledge building.

Read Aloud

Help students build and apply concept knowledge to a text that provides questions and answers to support listening comprehension.

Text Sets

Students read and reread texts for discovery, deeper understanding, and finally, for the author’s craft and purpose—building knowledge from the weekly or text-based Focus Question.

Learn more about our approach to building knowledge and teaching through texts in the Building Comprehension and Knowledge Overview.

Fluency

Repeated rereading helps students build automaticity so they can focus on the meaning of the text rather than decoding.

Culminating Tasks

Provide students with engaging ways to share the knowledge and skills they have gained throughout the unit.

Writing

We believe explicit writing instruction is just as essential as reading. As such, Emerge! California leverages a dedicated recursive writing pathway that links each text to a variety of genre writing projects.

Data-Informed Instruction

Just-in-time data empowers you to meet every student where they are—offering tailored recommendations for independent work or bite-sized, teacher-led remediation and extension in small groups.

Support for Multilingual Learners

Help your multilingual learners access rigorous grade-level content with robust MLL supports for both integrated and designated ELD instruction. These embedded, point-of-use resources offer support at three different levels—substantial, moderate, and minimal—to support language acquisition alongside core content.

Integrated ELD is built into the core Teacher's Edition, while designated ELD is the focus of the English Language Development Teacher's Edition and delivers dedicated, extended supports.
