WordStudio Overview

WordStudio is a dynamic intervention tool designed to support secondary students in grades 6–12 in building foundational literacy skills. These lessons target a specific group of students – middle and high schoolers – who have fallen behind in reading fluency and comprehension. By providing focused, instructional support on key foundational literacy skills, students have an opportunity to improve the essential skills necessary to achieve reading success in all content areas.

WordStudio lessons are designed to address critical reading skills identified by foundational literacy experts and reading intervention specialists. The lessons are organized into three areas of focus: phonics, word analysis, and reading comprehension.

The lessons follow a Video + Article + Activity format:

  • Ready – an instructional video about key reading skills and strategies with opportunities for both guided and independent practice.
  • Read – a high-interest, engaging article with differentiated text specifically written to include the skills taught in the instructional video.
  • Respond – multiple-choice activity questions designed to measure reading comprehension and student Lexile progress.

WordStudio provides an innovative instructional approach for educators to address decoding, encoding, and reading comprehension for struggling readers. The simple, intuitive format can be used during small group instruction or independent practice. Each lesson set focuses on a specific concept and includes mixed practice to review and reinforce skills taught.

Students begin with the Ready step by viewing an instructional video led by a teacher who presents the foundational literacy concept. The video guides students through multiple written-response exercises to help gauge and reinforce their understanding.

Next, the Read step features an article with differentiated text so students see content that is appropriate for their reading abilities. The topics of the articles have been chosen to appeal to middle and high school students and integrate words or concepts that directly correlate to the skills taught.

In the Respond step, students complete four multiple-choice questions that focus on reading comprehension and vocabulary.

Achieve3000 Literacy’s LevelSet online assessment measures students’ Lexile levels throughout the school year. You can use the LevelSet tool to help identify students struggling with foundational literacy skills who would benefit from the extra support WordStudio provides.

WordStudio for Grades 2-5

The WordStudio Grades 2–5 collection is a unique resource designed to provide support to students in grades 2–5 who may have gaps in foundational literacy skills and require support in phonics and word study, vocabulary, fluency, and reading comprehension. Students will be provided with explicit video instruction along with guided and independent practice opportunities, all geared toward elementary learners. This collection includes a spelling inventory to determine in which skills a student would benefit from support; a scope and sequence to guide a progression of instruction; sample lesson plans; a variety of activities for targeted, teacher-led small group instruction; and multisensory activity recommendations to extend and enhance instruction and student learning.

This collection includes the following resources:

  • Quick Start Guide
  • WordStudio Spelling Inventory (WSSI) Screening Tool
  • Phonics and Word Study Scope and Sequence
  • Instructional Video Lessons: Phonics and Word Study (Phase 1), Reading Comprehension (Phase 2)
  • Teacher Material to Support Small Group Instruction (by module)
  • Multisensory Activity Recommendations to Extend Learning

Use the WordStudio Spelling Inventory (WSSI) as the launching point for determining which module students should begin working on in the WordStudio Grades 2-5 foundational literacy collection.

The WSSI

  • was developed to inform a teacher’s knowledge about students’ gaps in phonics spelling patterns.
  • will make planning for additional explicit instruction and small group activities more productive and appropriately differentiated.
  • includes directions for administration, a word list and sample sentences that correlate to the scope and sequence and modules in the WordStudio Grades 2–5 collection, student feature guides and directions for scoring, and a classroom composite for an overall class view of your data.

Phonics and Word Study Scope and Sequence

  • outlines the phonics and word study skills addressed in the 19 individual modules.
  • includes a description of the focus skill as well as examples of the featured words used in the instructional videos.
  • shows which lessons are formative (practice while learning) and which are summative (review and assessment toward Lexile adjustment).

Instructional Video Lessons

There are two types of lessons in the collection, both designed to provide an innovative instructional approach to support elementary students as they learn new skills and to inform instruction when addressing gaps in foundational literacy skills.

Lesson type one (formative) follows a Video Instruction + Practice format: • Ready—Students are presented with two short videos to include explicit instruction and guided practice with TEIs and open-ended questions to follow.

Note: Because the intent of this lesson format is to provide students with multiple practice opportunities as they learn the skill prior to assessment toward Lexile adjustment, this lesson is formative in nature and without activity questions. It allows for teacher monitoring of progress as students engage in the learning process.

Lesson type two (summative) follows a Video Instruction + Article + Activity format:

  • Ready—Students are presented with two short videos to include explicit instruction and guided practice with TEIs and open-ended questions to follow. This lesson is the final one in the module and more of a review in nature.
  • Read—Students read a high-interest, engaging fiction or nonfiction article with differentiated text specifically written to include authentic representation of the skills presented in the instructional video.
  • Respond—Students answer four multiple-choice activity questions designed to measure reading comprehension and student Lexile progress.

Important Note: It is intended that once the WSSI is administered and students’ starting point is found, students should complete all lessons within the module, in order, beginning with lesson one. It is not recommended that students only complete the final lesson with activity questions. The main goal of this collection is to strengthen foundational literacy skills so students are successful when they read. It is important to provide practice opportunities prior to assessment toward Lexile adjustment.

Teacher Material to Support Small Group Instruction

This collection is supported by teacher material for every module that includes an overview of the key attributes of the skill, an explicit lesson plan for each skill that follows the gradual release of responsibility as well as best practices for teaching foundational literacy, application activities for small group instruction, and a separate resource of multisensory activities to extend instruction or to change up activities included in the lesson plans.

All teacher resources are located within each lesson of the WordStudio Grades 2–5 collection at point of use. These include:

  • WordStudio Spelling Inventory (WSSI) Screening Tool Grades 2–5
  • Phonics and Word Study Scope and Sequence
  • Teacher Material to Support Small Group Instruction (by module)
  • Multisensory Activity Recommendations to Extend Learning

How can I use the WordStudio Grades 2–5 collection to maximize literacy gains?

The WordStudio collection provides an innovative instructional approach for educators to address decoding, encoding, and reading comprehension for students who require additional support in foundational literacy.

  • The format can be used in small group instruction or independent practice.
  • Each module focuses on a specific concept and provides students with multiple opportunities to practice the learning (formative) prior to reading high-interest articles.
  • Articles are written specifically to engage the elementary reader in completing the multiple-choice questions (summative) that focus on reading comprehension and vocabulary.

Know Where to Begin

It all begins with the WordStudio Spelling Inventory Screening Tool! Not every student needs reinforcement in every skill. Use the spelling inventory to determine each student’s strengths and areas for growth and target their work in the modules that match their needs.

Step 1 - Administer the WordStudio Spelling Inventory to the class.*

Step 2 - Score the Inventory. Find gaps and strengths. Group your students according to skill need. Review the Scope and Sequence.

Step 3 - Assign the appropriately differentiated modules in order beginning with lesson one from your A3K Literacy teacher edition.

Step 4 - Monitor student data. Reinforce student learning in small group instruction using the teacher material.

*If your school or district already uses a screening tool or other measure to identify gaps in foundational literacy skills, just compare your tool with the WordStudio Grades 2-5 Scope and Sequence to determine in which module students should begin.

WordStudio FAQ

What is Achieve3000 WordStudio?

WordStudio is a series of lessons designed to support secondary students in grades 6-12 who need to build foundational literacy skills. WordStudio lessons are designed specifically to help students who are reading well below grade level. Featuring a teacher-led instructional video, these lessons focus on building the essential skills that middle and high school students need to improve their reading comprehension and fluency.

Why did Achieve3000 decide to create Achieve3000 WordStudio for secondary students?

Achieve3000 is targeting a specific group of students—middle and high schoolers—who have fallen behind in reading fluency and comprehension. Often, these students’ foundational reading skills are not strong enough to successfully navigate the increased rigor of academic texts. By providing focused, instructional support on key foundational literacy skills, students have an opportunity to improve the critical skills necessary to achieve reading success in all content areas.

How did Achieve3000 decide which skills to include in the Achieve3000 WordStudio lesson collection?

In order to determine the most impactful skills for inclusion in the WordStudio lessons, Achieve3000 completed a literature review that included some of the most recognized experts in foundational literacy, such as Foorman and Torgesen, Beck, Denton, and Slavin. Achieve3000 also worked with licensed reading intervention specialists to identify the key foundational skills that challenge secondary students who have difficulty with reading comprehension and fluency. Each skill is addressed individually and comprehensively, offering students opportunities to apply their knowledge of the skill in various ways throughout each lesson.

Which specific skills are covered?

The initial WordStudio lesson collection focuses on reinforcing key phonics skills and building decoding strategies for multisyllabic words. Future lessons will include reading comprehension strategies.

How is the scope and sequence structured?

Lessons are grouped into lesson sets—each set contains 2 to 3 lessons. Each set focuses on a specific concept (e.g., hard and soft c and g). Each set also includes Mixed Practice lessons which review and reinforce the skills taught in each lesson.

Are the Achieve 3000 WordStudio lessons aligned to standards?

Many states are beginning to add reading intervention standards for secondary students. These standards cover phonemic awareness, word analysis, reading comprehension, and fluency. The WordStudio lessons have been designed to support these foundational literacy standards.

How does a district know if they should use Achieve3000 WordStudio lessons?

WordStudio is designed to be used with those students who have fallen below grade level in reading comprehension and fluency. These lessons can be assigned to individual students who are having challenges or they can be used with small groups to support striving readers. Since lessons can be used independently, they are also ideal to help support remote learners as well.

Are Achieve3000 WordStudio lessons available in Spanish?

At this time, WordStudio lessons are available in English only.

Are Achieve3000 WordStudio lessons available in Spark?

Yes! WordStudio lessons are available for adults using Spark. As with all lesson collections, instructors can assign them as needed or even deactivate the entire collection.

How is an Achieve3000 WordStudio lesson structured?

WordStudio lessons are labeled as Instruction + Article and contain the following steps:
1. The instructional component takes place during the Ready step. During this step, students view an instructional video and have opportunities for both Guided and Independent Practice.
2. In the Read step, students read a high-interest, engaging, age-appropriate article, specifically written to include the skill taught. This allows the students to apply what they have learned in the Ready step.
3. In the Respond step, students will complete four multiple-choice questions about the article they have read, focused on reading comprehension and vocabulary. These multiple-choice questions count towards the Lexile adjustment calculation.

What does the Guided Practice look like for students?

Students begin by viewing an instructional video led by a teacher who presents the foundational literacy concept and guides students through multiple written response exercises to help gauge and reinforce their understanding.

What does the Independent Practice look like for students?

At the end of each Guided Practice, students are instructed to answer four technology-enhanced items (TEIs) that are focused on the skill they have just learned. There are myriad formats for these questions, including multiple choice, multiple choice/multiple select, drag and drop charts, Venn diagram, drag and drop sequencing, and cite evidence. The questions feature increasingly complex vocabulary words, from basic, known words up to grade- level words. These TEIs work just like the traditional Activity questions—i.e., students get two tries to answer correctly before moving on to the next question.

How long does it take a student to complete an Achieve3000 WordStudio lesson?

WordStudio lessons have been designed to target specific foundational literacy skills while keeping students engaged and motivated. Students should be able to move through the lesson components in approximately 20 minutes.

How does a WordStudio article in the Read step differ from the traditional Literacy articles?

In WordStudio lessons, the Read step features an article specifically written to support the skill covered in the lesson. The topics of the articles have been chosen to appeal to secondary students and integrate words that directly correlate to the skills taught. The featured vocabulary addresses a range of reading levels, including both known words and grade-level words. The articles are differentiated by Lexile. These focused articles have a lower readability level and are shorter in overall length than typical articles found in other Achieve3000 Literacy lesson types.

How is Achieve3000 WordStudio delivered to students?

WordStudio is available in Achieve3000 Literacy (including Spark) and Achieve3000 Literacy with Boost. By default, the collection is turned on for all grade 6-12 classes. Teachers can turn off the entire collection or assign it to specific students who need support.

How do teachers turn off the collection if they don’t need it?

The WordStudio lesson collection works like any other lesson collection. To deactivate the collection, refer to the Create and Assign Achieve3000 Literacy Lesson Collections article for more information and steps.

How do teachers update an assignment so that only certain students receive the lessons?

The WordStudio lesson collection works like any other lesson collection. To edit the lesson assignment, click the pencil icon on the lesson card on the home page. Then, select the date range and/or students that should receive the lesson. Refer to the Create and Assign Achieve3000 Literacy Lesson Collections article for more information and steps.

How does a teacher know if a student needs Achieve3000 WordStudio lessons? Is there a diagnostic assessment?

Using LevelSet will help determine if a student needs to build the foundational literacy skills included in WordStudio. Mixed Practice lessons can also be used to screen students on their knowledge of specific skills. Generally, students with Lexile scores significantly below grade level are ideal candidates for the WordStudio lessons. Reference the chart below for the specific cut scores by grade level and LevelSet administration.
