Clinical Reasoning is led by Editor-in-Chief Dr. Scott Stern — author of Symptom to Diagnosis — whose evidence-based approach has shaped how generations of students learn to reason clinically. Guided by Dr. Stern’s vision and supported by a collaborative team of expert educators and physicians, every framework, Illness Script, and AI-powered patient encounter reflects their collective commitment to improving the way clinical reasoning is taught and practiced.

Editor, Symptom to Diagnosis: An Evidence Based Guide

Dr. Scott Stern, Professor of Medicine (retired), played an eminent role as a medical educator at the Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago. During his tenure, he received over 50 teaching awards as well as the Favorite Faculty Award 23 times. In 2006, Dr. Stern was elected as an Inaugural Member of the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators at the University of Chicago. He held the position of Co-Course Director of Clinical Pathophysiology and Therapeutics, one of the most highly regarded courses in the Pritzker curriculum, from 2002 to 2023. Dr. Stern also served as Co-Director of the Junior Clerkship in Internal Medicine from 1995 to 2013.

Along with colleagues Adam Cifu, Jason Alexander, and Diane Altkorn, fellow lead authors of the textbook, Symptom to Diagnosis: An Evidence Based Guide, Dr. Stern received the Society of General Medicine National Award for Scholarship in Medical Education in 2006. The text is entering its fifth edition and is the third most popular book on AccessMedicine. Utilizing an innovative approach to help students and residents master diagnostic reasoning, each chapter addresses a common complaint or disorder and organizes a systematic approach. Together with colleague and co-author, Dr. Adam Cifu, they have created the “The S2D Podcast” series, also available on AccessMedicine.

Dr. Stern has served as the Associate Editor of the New England Journal of Medicine Healer project, as the Senior Medical Editor for the creation of interactive online cases on the i-Human Patients, Inc. platform, and is currently Editor-in-Chief for the McGraw Hill Clinical Reasoning platform.
