Respondus Monitor is a companion application for LockDown Browser that uses webcam and video technology to prevent cheating during online exams. Respondus Monitor integrates seamlessly with ALEKS and is intended for non-proctored testing environments.
There are two ways to license Respondus Monitor with ALEKS: 1) student purchase, or 2) linking ALEKS to your institution’s Respondus Monitor license. Both options are described below.
Student Purchase
The "Student Purchase" option provides students unlimited use Respondus Monitor during the ALEKS course. The total cost is $10 and can be purchased by credit card, debit card or PayPal. Students are prompted for payment the first time they encounter an exam in the course that requires Respondus Monitor. (A practice exam is highly recommended so students can complete the purchase and familiarize themselves with the webcam requirements before a real exam.)
Note: Student is unable to purchase a Respondus Monitor license while using the iPad app.
For security reasons, the iPad app for the Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor cannot process credit card transactions for users who need to purchase a Monitor license. The user will need to log in on a Windows or Mac device to complete the purchase, then they can resume normal access on the iPad.
Link to your institution's Respondus Monitor license
If your institution has a separate license for Respondus Monitor, and you wish to link it to the ALEKS system, follow these steps:
- Your institution’s administrator for Respondus Monitor should log in at www.respondus.com (top right corner).
- Select the link for "LockDown Browser & Respondus Monitor" and then access the "Control Panel".
- Create an ALEKS server profile and be sure to enable Respondus Monitor for the profile.
- Once the server profile has been created, copy the Institution ID value from the profile summary.
- Return to your ALEKS Administrator Account, and under Institution Administration, select Account Summary, edit "Settings/LockDown Browser Options," and "Enter your Respondus Institution ID".
ALEKS will now draw Respondus Monitor seats from your institution’s license of Respondus Monitor, rather than prompting students to purchase a seat themselves. Administrator reporting for Respondus Monitor will show distinct seat usage by the ALEKS system.
NOTE: Switching from the student fee to a paid Respondus Monitor license can only be done for future courses or cohorts in ALEKS. If the change is made during a course/cohort in which Respondus Monitor is in use, the student fee will still apply to the pre-existing courses.
