Early mathematics skills are a strong predictor of later academic success. A child's knowledge of math in preschool is associated with achievement into high school and can forecast later reading achievement even better than early reading skills. Given opportunities, young children have a surprising capacity for learning complex and sophisticated mathematics. However, teachers often underestimate children's mathematical abilities, leading to a lack of appropriately challenging activities.

Most children in the U.S. lack opportunities for high-quality math learning, creating a school-readiness gap that affects not just the most disadvantaged, but children across most income levels. The quality of math education in early years settings is often disappointing, with some studies showing that very little time is dedicated to mathematical activities, and the instruction that does occur can be ineffective.

Effective math interventions and curricula, such as those built on ""learning trajectories,"" like Building Blocks, are available and show meaningful, positive associations with children's mathematics knowledge. For these gains to be sustained, a seamless educational approach is needed from preschool through the primary grades. This requires qualified instructors with a deep understanding of early math concepts and professional development that supports their knowledge and skills.
