Young children have the capacity to learn substantial mathematics during the preschool and early elementary years, yet many lack opportunities to develop these skills. Early mathematical knowledge is associated with later academic achievement, including success in reading and science-related fields. Quantitative, spatial, and logical reasoning developed through mathematics may form a cognitive foundation that supports learning across subjects.

Children’s early experiences with mathematics vary widely. Some children enter school with significantly less exposure to mathematical ideas and fewer opportunities to express or represent mathematical thinking. For example, children from low-resource communities may perform similarly to peers on tasks using physical objects but demonstrate more difficulty with verbally presented mathematical problems and explaining mathematical ideas. Developing the ability to represent and explain mathematical concepts is considered an important component of mathematical learning.

Research-based early childhood mathematics interventions have been designed to support the development of these skills. Programs such as Number Worlds and Building Blocks include structured activities that focus on foundational mathematical domains, including number concepts, counting, early arithmetic ideas, and spatial and geometric thinking. These programs incorporate multiple instructional approaches, including guided activities, games, and experiences using different representations of numbers and quantities.

A central framework used in several interventions is the concept of learning trajectories. Learning trajectories include three elements: a learning goal, a developmental progression describing how children’s thinking typically develops, and instructional activities designed to support progress through those stages. This framework helps teachers align instruction with children’s current levels of understanding and supports assessment and professional development.

Large-scale studies of these interventions report improvements in the quantity and quality of mathematics instruction and higher mathematics achievement among participating preschool children compared with typical classroom practices. Professional development and coordinated instructional supports are also described as components of effective implementation.
