Would this be the day? Would humans write that this

was the day that a real airplane flew?

Orville and Wilbur Wright were on the seashore.

A small airplane sat on wood tracks. Well, it was

an airplane if it would fly. Wilbur had tried to fly the

airplane. That flight failed, but it taught the Wrights

a few things.

Now it was Orville’s turn. What did he feel? “Did

we do enough? Will this fly? If it does, will I die in

a wreck?”

Wilbur and a few men got the airplane set. Its motor

began to run. Ropes still kept it on the ground.

The ropes fell off. The motor made the airplane go up.

Orville flew! The airplane did bob up and down a bit,

but it flew. On December 17, 1903, a human flew for

the first time.

Write it down. This was the day!
