1. General Overview:

a. What is Learning Coach, and what does it do?

Learning Coach is a conversational AI tutor that adapts to each learner’s unique needs, by offering real-time and targeted guidance. Through dynamic dialogue, it reviews foundational concepts, answers questions, and provides step-by-step explanations so every interaction drives active learning. By focusing on what matters most, the Learning Coach empowers students to efficiently master even the most challenging topics.

b. How does it benefit users?

Learning Coach supports students as they work through challenging topics by prompting them to explain their thinking and make connections to the content through dynamic dialogue. Because it’s trained on common student misconceptions, Learning Coach can guide students’ reasoning and help them build a deeper understanding of each concept.

c. Does it train on user inputs?

No. Learning Coach uses user inputs during the duration of the session only.  No user inputs are used to train the system.

2. How It Works:

a. What type of AI technology powers the product?

Learning Coach uses Generative AI technology to power the AI tutor.  Video content within Learning Coach is generated by Generative AI and reviewed and edited by human subject matter experts. Please see the <Nutrition Label> for more information.

b. How are responses or recommendations generated?

Students engage in dynamic conversations with a Generative AI tutor that uses targeted learning objectives and an understanding of common misconceptions to aide student learning and responds based on the students' inputs.

c. What controls do instructors have?

Learning Coach is an optional assignment type to support student learning and is not required to be included in your course instruction

3. Privacy and Security:

a. How is user data handled?

The AI tutor only has access to user inputs for the duration of the session, to guide responses.  Learning Coach does not share data with the base model vendor for model training purposes.  McGraw Hill  records all model inputs and outputs for quality assurance and product improvement.  Personal Data will be deleted after 3 years.

b. What measures are in place to protect privacy and ensure security?

McGraw Hill takes matters of privacy and security very seriously, and we have performed extensive testing and monitoring to ensure Learning Coach meets our high standards for educational use.

No Access to PII: Learning Coach’s model does not require access to any personally identifiable information (PII) or specific user data.

No Data Sharing: Learning Coach does not share data with the model vendor for model training purposes.

Secure Data Handling: Our secure system records all model inputs (e.g., student responses) and outputs for product improvement and model evaluations. Personal Data will be deleted after 3 years.

4. Limitations and Accuracy:

a. Is Learning Coach always accurate? 

Learning Coach uses Generative AI technology, which may generate responses with errors or incomplete information. McGraw Hill uses multiple methods to improve accuracy, including system prompts developed by instructional experts, extensive testing and monitoring, and guardrails to ensure responses are aligned with learning objectives.  McGraw Hill is dedicated to the continuous improvement of our products, including Learning Coach, and engages in ongoing monitoring to ensure Learning Coach improves as a reliable and effective educational tool.

b. What should users do if they encounter an issue?

If users encounter an issue, they can submit a ticket here https://mh.my.site.com/CXG/s/ContactUsWebForm and select Connect.

5. Human Oversight:

a. Is Learning Coach on or off by default?

Learning Coach is an optional assignment type in Connect.  If the instructor would not like to use Learning Coach, they would not assign it within Connect.

b. Is there a way to request human intervention or support?

c. How are flagged issues addressed?

When issues are flagged through a support ticket internal development teams will review the issue and work to resolve it.

6. Bias and Fairness:

a. What steps have been taken to help make Learning Coach fair and unbiased?

McGraw Hill has high standards for developing fair and unbiased products. Learning Coach is programmed using a proprietary, lengthy prompt to reduce bias. These prompts have been designed by experts to minimize potential biases, inaccuracies, or inappropriateness in responses. Additionally, all AI generated video content is reviewed for accuracy before release, and we continually monitor the AI tutor’s responses to ensure that Learning Coach is generating fair and unbiased responses and continues to improve as a reliable educational tool. While AI may generate biased or inaccurate information, McGraw Hill is dedicated to offering safest-in-class AI solutions for education.
