After completing the Tools Tutorial, ALEKS is ready to learn what your student does or doesn’t know. This is done with an Initial Knowledge Check.

ALEKS is a free-response system, with an emphasis on replicating the pen-to-paper experience, so students will see very little multiple choice options.

Step 8 of 44

As students answer the Initial Knowledge Check, around 30 questions in length, ALEKS is evaluating each response and generating the next question to build the most complete learning profile.

Step 9 of 44

If a student doesn’t know a concept, they have the ability to skip a question. ALEKS will encourage students to answer the question as best they can before using the “I Don’t Know” button. By using the button, ALEKS will determine that they have no knowledge of the concept and that will impact their overall placement. ALEKS learns more from a wrong answer than from an unanswered question.
