The Core-Plus Mathematics series replaces the traditional Algebra/Geometry-Advanced Algebra/Trigonometry-Precalculus sequence of high school mathematics courses. Each of the first three courses focuses on important and broadly useful mathematics aligned with the CCSS for all students. The fourth course, Course 4: Preparation for Calculus, continues to prepare students moving forward in STEM-oriented college mathematics courses, specifically calculus.
Beth Ritsema, Author and Professional Development Coordinator for Core-Plus Mathematics, shares how the integrated sequence of coursework has been improved to better prepare students for mathematics success on the Common Core and college and careers.
Being college and career-ready means being able to tackle more complex mathematical problems. Core-Plus Mathematics’ integration of real-world contexts connects math to the students’ world, engaging them in applying and reasoning about mathematics in ways that make sense to them.
Mathematics education is not “one size fits all.” Because classrooms have students with different levels of math proficiency, Core-Plus Mathematics is constructed to easily incorporate differentiation to scaffold and challenge students as needed in every unit, every day.
The Core-Plus Mathematics series is built so that students are actively engaged in problem-based investigations and mathematical discourse. Small and large group discussions promote sharing and explaining newly discovered mathematical concepts.
The CCSS Edition of Core-Plus Mathematics builds on the strengths of the prior editions, the first of which was cited as one of six exemplary mathematics programs in the United States by the U.S. Department of Education.
The Charles A. Dana Center at The University of Texas at Austin found the integration of real-world applications in Core-Plus Mathematics cultivates reasoning and argumentation through opportunities for students to justify their thinking, as well as critique the reasoning of peers.
Identified by the American Institute for Research and the Business-Higher Education Forum’s Strategic Ed Solutions as one of 35 education programs in the U.S. (across all subject areas) to increase student achievement and improve college and career-readiness.
According to the findings of What Works Clearinghouse, the Core-Plus Mathematics program can positively increase student SAT mathematics scores.
