About the Author

Thomas Richards

Mr. Richards has a varied and extensive background in many aspects of the educational world. For over ten years he was a senior mathematics editor for Laidlaw Brothers (once a textbook division of Doubleday & Company and now integrated into McGraw Hill and SRA). Following his editorial job in Chicago, Tom moved to a small Missouri community where he taught twenty plus years at Lamar’s Middle School. There he taught all aspects of mathematics, remedial basics through algebra. Tom combined his editorial knowledge and classroom teaching experiences to develop the Spectrum Mathematics Series. These experiences provide proven classroom-honed methods for teaching practical, everyday, and essential mathematical concepts and skills to students of all abilities. Tom teaches and applies practical mathematics in his Aviation Classes (Private, Instrument, and Commercial Flight and Ground School) at Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas, a teaching assignment he has enjoyed over twenty years. As a Certified Flight Instructor, he has taught hundreds of students how to fly airplanes. He is frequently in the air and continues to help students attain their Private and Commercial licenses. As a result of another hobby, Tom, a semi-professional magician, incorporates mathematics into the “Magic Workshops” he conducts several times a year at Pittsburg State University. In an effort to help people achieve the necessary skills to meet career goals in various industries, Crowder College, Neosho, Missouri, developed several “WorkKeys” programs in the late 90’s. For this Tom wrote the “WorkKeys” mathematics programs and edited the other “WorkKeys” programs.
